9.30 am: departure from Perranporth Beach Road car park.
Travel west through the heartlands of mining country where Sir Francis Bassett’s immense empire dominated both the landscape and the social history of the area.
Travelling south towards Helston you will be driven past numerous towering Cornish mine engine houses across some of the land that was once part of the richest mineral areas in the world.
11.00 am: Poldark Mine. Walk through the array of old machinery and museum collections from mines all over Cornwall to watch a fascinating short film on the history of mining in Cornwall and its effect on mining worldwide then accompanied by a mining expert you can go underground to experience first-hand the life in a latter-day tin mine.
Following your underground visit and once again coming to “grass” we will then travel through the mining district of Wendron towards the famous seaport of Falmouth.
Here we have time to grab a fabulous coffee and a quick snack lunch before your very own pasty making class. Nothing too heavy now as you’ll be wanting to keep some room for the next activity.
1.00 pm: Pasty School with Charlie Choak, the pasty bloke! Charlie has been making pasties to his old family recipe his entire working life and now he shares his family recipe with you. Roll your sleeves up for loads of laughs and get rolling and stuffing your own pasty (vegetarian option available). Take away your own handmade piping hot pasty !
The day of appreciation for our miners, mechanics and balmaidens of yesteryear concludes with a drive to Camborne, the epicentre of the mining communities of Cornwall.
Where we will visit:
3.30: King Edward Mine, another of the gems of Cornish mining heritage for a tour of the mine, mill and museum and feel the ambiance of a working mine with the sound of the stamps hammering in your ears. We can settle down here and appreciate your hot handmade pasties washed down with some refreshment from the aptly named Croust Café.
6.00 pm: Return to Perranporth.
Price per person:
£190 including entry to attractions, activities and including your own pasty for afternoon “croust”.
