Description

7 Nights at Burncoose House with a 3 Night extension staying at The Seiners Arms in Perranporth.

By popular request we are repeating our Poldark House Party at the beautiful BURNCOOSE HOUSE for a strictly limited number of people. A new itinerary incorporates POLDARK locations with added extras, which includes WINE TOURS, GARDENS at the height of their colour and other excursions. A trip to PLYMOUTH for the MAYFLOWER PILGRIMS, boat cruises and HISTORIC HOUSES.

We have a housekeeper and a private chef whilst we enjoy this luxurious vacation in splendid surroundings.

Monday 10th June: check in to BURNCOOSE HOUSE for 7 nights.  This is again, our own stately home for the week, set in 38 acres of gardens and woodland which is just for our private use, it is owned by a member of the Williams Family who also own the Caerhays estate and is in fact their country residence.  It’s amazing and we love it.  On arrival we will have drinks and dinner waiting for us and after dinner we will dive into Poldark with board games and trivia and box sets of the various seasons of the series. The bedrooms are huge and the en suite bathrooms beyond beautiful.  The bed linen is to die for! … Oh, and we have table tennis, a games room and a hot tub too!

Tuesday: 11th June: am:  We take a drive west to ST MICHAEL’S MOUNT for a guided tour of the castle and gardens.  The island is tidal and we may have to reverse this visit with our afternoon itinerary depending on sea state and tides. there are ferries as well as a causeway.  We will decide closer to the time. After the Mount we will drive through MOUSEHOLE AND NEWLYN (WHERE THE MAYFLOWER MADE HER LAST LANDFALL BEFORE HER HISTORIC VOYAGE) We will Grab a pasty for lunch somewhere en route.
pm: We head to ST IVES for an afternoon appreciating this lovely fishing port which has forever enjoyed the patronage of artists due to its unique light and position.  Here there are so many options of things to do but we suggest a visit to the BARBARA HEPWORTH SCULPTURE GARDENS AND MUSEUM is a must along with a browse around the galleries and shops and perhaps a visit to LEACH POTTERY.  Afterwards we return to Burncoose for dinner and a soak in the hot tub and evening walks in the gardens.

Wednesday 12th June: am:  We will have a leisurely start before we head to the closest part of the north coast to visit the iconic engine house of WHEAL COATES and take a coastal path walk to ST AGNES HEAD. Wheal Coates is set to make an appearance in POLDARK Season 5 and ST AGNES HEAD has seen the most emotional scenes been Demelza and Ross play out; including their farewell to daughter Julia and Ross’s arrest.   Many clifftop scenes have been shot here and the views are breathtaking!  We drive through true POLDARK country, via Stippy Stappy Lane, St Agnes, and stop at WHEAL KITTY for lunch at the excellent new CANTEEN restaurant.
pm: After this we visit the National Trust property of TRERICE MANOR near Newquay.  This Elizabethan Manor was the inspiration for Winston’s imagining of TRENWITH and when you see it, you can easily appreciate why.  After this visit we have a leisurely afternoon of meandering to arrive at CAMEL VALLEY VINEYARD for their 5.00 pm: Grand tour and tasting with their MASTER WINEMAKER.
This tour ends around 6.30 so we will head back for a relaxed buffet supper back at Burncoose House, probably accompanied with some rather excellent wines.

Thursday 13th June:

OPTION 1: MINERS, “METHODY”S” AND PASTIES DAY.

Am: We drive south to THE CHURCH OF THE STORMS at GUNWALLOE where we will also see DOLLAR COVE where they filmed the night wreck scene of the Queen Charlotte and we will also walk a little of the coast path towards Loe Bar to see Dr Dwight’s coastal cottage of Season 2. before you choose what you’d most like to do next.

EITHER:

OPTION 1a: Heading to POLDARK MINE for an underground tour of this old tin mine.  POLDARK MINE was used for underground scenes in Season 1 before the production company built a mine set in their studio! (Which must be a lot more comfortable!) There is an excellent collection of mining ephemera here as well as several full church organs from decommissioned Methodist Miner’s Chapels. OR

OPTION 1b: for those who don’t fancy going underground, we will drive to KYNANCE COVE further down the peninsula. After this we will pick up our erstwhile “miners” and head straight to Falmouth for PASTY SCHOOL with Charlie Choak.  Everyone’s favourite activity and finishing up with your own yummy pasty, crimped with your fair hands!
OR:

OPTION 2: FAL RIVER BOAT TRIP AND TREBAH GARDENS.

Am: We drive you to Malpas (Reverend Osborne Whitworth, unexceptional parish) to pick up the Enterprise Boat to Falmouth. This beautiful cruise down the tidal River Fal, traces the trade route that ships would have used when originally bringing their wares to be marketed in Truro. This would of course have included tin and copper and all the other ores that were mined across Cornwall. On the river you will be able to look left for a spectacular view of Lord Falmouth’s TREGOTHNAN, which is still the home of the Boscawen family. A little further downstream and again on the eastern bank is the old cottage known as the Smuggler’s Moorings. This was where EISENHOWER was billeted during the time running up to the DDay landings and from here he signed off the final plans for the assault. You will also pass TRELISSICK at the river crossing known as King Harry ferry, which was the home of Sir Ralph Daniell, another of the historic figures who makes an appearance in the Poldark novels. On arrival in Falmouth you may either join the Pasty School group OR be collected and transferred to Trebah Gardens a few miles away. Trebah has an extraordinary history and was used by the US military as a main embarkation point for troops destined for the Normandy Beaches.

Whichever you choose to do we will reconvene and head back to Burncoose via the famous preaching place of John Wesley at GWENNAP PIT before going home to Burncoose for dinner.

Friday 14th June: SAND BETWEEN YOUR TOES DAY: am:    We will visit HOLYWELL BEACH to paddle in the shore break where Demelza got that beautiful red ball gown so wet and where Ross and Dwight have both stepped from the waves,  So many tender family moments have taken place on this version of Hendrawna Beach and we will walk to the end and see the Holy Well of St Cuthbert before moving over to Perranporth beach for a walk along the real HENDRAWNA BEACH.  Into the area which Winston Graham knew as his NAMPARA COVE.  Into the cave where Ross’s boat “Nampara Girl” would have been stowed.  We will stand where Winston wrote his books and enjoy the views that inspired our heroes and influenced their lives and have a stop at the MINERS ARMS pub on the way home to BURNCOOSE HOUSE.

Saturday 15th June: am: PAMPER & ME-TIME DAY: We all spend so much time rushing around and seeing things that we thought it might be nice to stop at home on this day and just commune with our wonderful surroundings. Enjoy the gardens and lake.  Walk, talk and perhaps read our favourite Poldark passages together.   We will also have some therapists join us for various treatments.  We will send a list of available treatments nearer the time.  Yoga on the front lawn is something we will be considering as a daily exercise anyhow but on this RELAXATION DAY we will go all out.  Massage, Aromatherapy, Nail technicians, Various Yoga Sessions, A day to stay in our big fluffy bathrobes and just pamper ourselves stupid.
Evening:  No day of pampering is going to be complete without a Courtyard Barbecue and Hot tub party, so that is how we will wind up the day.  Feeling fabulous and loving life!

Sunday 16th June: am: A drive up to PADSTOW is the order of the day.  First, we may stop at the epic BEDRUTHAN STEPS or PARK HEAD and take in the incredible views of the offshore Stone Stacks that feature as the backdrop for so many scenes.  Then we drive to STEPPER POINT which affords us an amazing view of the Camel estuary and the location of the opening sequence of Season 3 when Elizabeth’s horse ran away with her near the clifftop.

We will then visit the beautiful home of the Prideaux-Brune family; PRIDEAUX PLACE (or Place House, as it is also known).  This is where Winston finished writing the last Poldark and wrote the Prideaux family into the story.  We will have a lovely homemade lunch here before touring the house and then we will go into Padstow for the rest of the day, taking in the shops and the buzzy atmosphere of this “Foodie” mecca.
return to Burncoose House for our FAREWELL POLDARK BANQUET in (optional) GEORGIAN COSTUME, with our very own VAUXHALL PLEASURE GARDEN EXTRAVAGANZA on the lawn.

3 NIGHT EXTENSION AT THE SEINERS ARMS IN PERRANPORTH:

Monday 17th June: am: following Check out at Burncoose and after we have dried our eyes for those that couldn’t stay a few days longer….

We will visit the city of Truro.  With its impressive CATHEDRAL on the site of what once was the St Marychurch on which the loathsome Reverend Osborne Whitworth had his eye, Truro is steeped in the history and heritage on which the POLDARK saga is based.  We see the site of the former RED LION INN, the COINAGE HALL where the ore was auctioned, The Quay and Market where goods would have been unloaded and perhaps visit the Royal Cornwall Museum for much of the background of Sir Francis Bassett’s wealth as well as many other mining adventures OR simply just do a bit of shopping!
We visit the Heron Inn at Malpas for lunch and then we check into the Seiners Arms for the last few nights of your stay overlooking HENDRAWNA BEACH. Dinner together at the Seiners.

Tuesday 18th June am: WEST CORNWALL POLDARK LOCATIONS DAY:

I know you have already experienced the beauty of West Cornwall and visited the mines at BOTALLACK and stood on the slipway at PENBERTH COVE or PORTHGWARRA, and seen PORTHCURNO AND GWENNAP HEAD. But in my experience, there is no such thing as too much of these wonderful places! So today we will visit West Cornwall to see these again and try to put an EXTRA added element in to our itinerary; we will visit GEEVOR MINE MUSEUM and LEVANT MINE and also try and book tickets for the Minack Theatre performance in the evening, as an optional extra as and when they release their June 2019 programme and tickets.

If you do not wish to venture to the Minack Theatre the Seiners Arms has lively Cornish Folk music every Tuesday evening as an alternative.

Wednesday 19th June am: MAYFLOWER 400 PREVIEW DAY VISIT TO PLYMOUTH.  We leave promptly at 9.00am for the hour and a half drive through south east Cornwall and over the River Tamar to the embarkation site of the MAYFLOWER PILGRIMS.  We will visit the MAYFLOWER STEPS, MUSEUM, and MAYFLOWER TRAIL and enjoy the ambiance of old Plymouth.  We will have lunch on the Barbican before taking a Plymouth Boat Trip across Plymouth Sound, past Drake’s Island, via the Docks and Royal Naval Base, past the glorious site of Royal William Yard to Mount Edgcumbe Park and House.
On our return we will visit the Plymouth Gin Distillery before driving past the remarkable CITADEL to PLYMOUTH HOE and the place where Sir Francis Drake completed his game of bowls before defeating the Spanish Armada.  We will pay our respects at the Cenotaph here before heading back to Cornwall.
We will stop for a pub dinner at the ROD & LINE in Tideford on the way home.  The food is great and those who have seen the Dawn French series “DELICIOUS” will recognise it as well as the Mount Edgcumbe estate!

Thursday 20th June am: THE BEST OF CORNWALL’S SPRING GARDENS DAY:

Am: THE LOST GARDENS OF HELIGAN: This beautiful and extensive garden will stay in your heart forever and as Heligan has arguably one of the best gift shops in the world this is your chance to take care of all the gifts you wish to buy for your loved ones, including yourself. Heligan Kitchen Restaurant is a delight so we will stay here for lunch and then head to CAERHAYS CASTLE for a tour of the gardens and maybe even the Castle with the owner Charles Williams.

AND then when we get back to Seiners, we get to have our own team in landlady; Lisa’s famous pub quiz.
